My friend Jeanne-marie is my only friend who writes letters. On stationery. And sends them. It's awesome. A few weeks ago she wrote and asked me what I was listening to. So I picked this little playlist of the music that is playing in my studio these days with her in mind. I tried to send it to her but I couldn't get it to go over the internet (the irony) so I thought I'd post it. Should you find yourself listening to it and thinking that I am missing some band I've never heard of that I need to hear, let me (and JM) know, 'kay? We'd love that.

Looks to me like you're missing Dave Rawlings Machine - great collaborator with Ryan Adams and Old Crow Medicine Show!

This is an awesome list. I too love the Chase McBride's Band. Of course Sarah Brightman really is my favorite for walks and getting the creative thing going.

I needed this post. Can you believe I don't know any of these songs, or bands for that matter. I think I got stuck in the nineties somehow. Thank you for bringing me into the 21 century! I am listening to your playlist as we speak, at work where I should be working on an article.

I just clicked on the first song in your list, and am really enjoying it, just my cup of tea. Think I'll listen to them all later, whilst I'm doing a little crochet and a little knitting, what an enjoyable prospect. A nice cafetiere coffe will join in the equation too me thinks. Vanessa x

Thanks for sharing your playlist Alicia! Here's a band who are different but might sit well with your set. Singer/songwriter Ben Williams with his band are surely making a name for themselves here in London. I particularly like 'Let it Rain' and 'Silvertown' (new one not on their site yet but great!)
Check them out here :

You introduced me to The Avett Brothers...from whom I have never recovered and for which I can never really thank you enough. What a fabulous thread your comment box has turned into! I have a huge list of music to look up now! Thanks for all the ideas Alicia and Friends....on your mix I like 1,2,3 and 7 best.

Currently I am loving an album called Teen Dream by 'Beach House. It's all summery and dreamy - as an avid daydreamer I find it the perfect soundtrack to my days.

How brave of you! I think it takes a lot of courage to put a playlist out there like that. Its like someone going through your ipod... are they going to laugh that Britney Spears makes an ungodly number of appearances on your workout playlist? Are they going to think that the 'indie' bands you love suck? It takes cajones I say!
That being said, your playlist is wonderful. I live in North Carolina and am so proud to see not only the Avett Brothers but hometown heroes Old Crow Medicine Show on your list. You should check out Langhorn Slim for some up beat jams. He opened for the Avett Bros when I saw them this past New Years Eve. =)

hi alicia!
i seem to listen to some form of evan dando on a regular basis whether its his solo work or with the lemonheads. other tops on my list (and i'm probably showing my age) are teenage fanclub, luna, the strokes, and lately some REM. big projects require frank black's - teenager of the year.
ever go to pandora radio? it's the best. you create your own radio station by plugging in your faves and then they add bands that go with your picks. delish. pandora.com

This is great! I have been collecting new music like a magpie lately; from this list I know I love the Black Keyes, and now I think I already like the Foxymorons.

I love whoever said you're a "boys with guitars" kind of girl, because I've never thought of it that way but that is totally me!! It's funny how I loved punk rock back in the day but lately it's Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Pete Seeger and the White Stripes doing old blues covers.

Love your playlist. Yes, a couple of female vocals on it would be great. I think what also fits this is list is: Van Morrison's "Sweet thing". It's an oldy, but beautiful.

Love this list! I skimmed the comments and didn't see anyone suggest Grizzly Bear. I was just passed along their CD Veckatimest and I think you would enjoy them!
Thanks for the tunes!

Bon Iver, Mumford & Sons, Isbells (a Belgian band), Florence & the Machine, Great Lake Swimmers, a few of the bands I like to listen to while working in my studio.

I so love this kind of music. You and I have many of the same favorites!
Have recently been rediscovering my old Son Volt albums... For some reason, they always say "summer's coming" to me!

Nice! You can't go wrong with Patty Griffin or Gillian Welch, either...

The Weepies, definitely. Also, what about The Swell Season? Their new one, Strict Joy, has been my constant companion since Christmas.

I have been loving Deer Tick so much. The newest album is called Born on Flag Day and I particularly love the songs Little White Lies and Houston, TX. It makes me think of all of the oodles of other music that is out there yet to be discovered! I think you and Andy would love them!
I'm also loving the The Cave Singers and The Moondoggies.

Nice, Alicia. I'm listening to this whilst processing my photos. A good morning for me - thank you.

Oh, love your list! I'm excited I get to hear Wilco perform at our wonderful Durham Performing Arts Center this Saturday. Small venue with fab acoustics!

Fun playlist!
Here's my two cents: Anything by Ray Lamontagne, the xx, Fleet Foxes or Doug Martsch Band. Also, the Garden State soundtrack and the Stealing Beauty soundtrack...
And, hooray for the written letter on real stationary! It's a dying art, isn't it?

Try The Swell Season Alicia.I hope you love them as much as I do. They're very talented but come across as lovely people. Not that talented people aren't always lovely...! Listening to Glen inspired me to pick up my guitar again after a 20 year gap. Love Becky.x
