Jeanne-marie and I both heard the same story on NPR yesterday (cool, since I'm in Portland and she's in Chicago) about Joanna Newsom's new album, so we've been listening to her music all morning (and firing off emails that basically say, "Wow, listen to this!" and "Wow, listen to this!" and "Wow, listen to that!"). I'm not sure if anyone mentioned her in the comments the other day because I haven't gotten through all of the suggestions, but all I can say is: Wow.

Hey, make the dress she's wearing. It looks like something you can just whip up!!!!!

NPR also recently featured my favorite singer/songwriter - Caroline Herring - on All Things Considered. I think you'd like her since you love the Avett Brothers.
Listen to her music here: http://www.carolineherring.com/music.php
My favorite song is Whippoorwhill. I lived in London in the summer of 2002, right after her first album came out, and when I got homesick this album made me feel home all around.

It's all about "Monkey & Bear" for me. Actually, all of Y's.
And "Colleen", too.

Joanna is ace. But you might also like local Australian gal, Sarah Blasko. She's really great and has several albums behind her. Try this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJvAY_FuF_0&feature=channel or this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5RtLfE7K6Q
And another cute Australian, Lisa Mitchell : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RowAc-H3EM

Love your music taste! Her harp playing is amazing.
Have you heard any of Priscilla Ahn's stuff? I think you might like her, check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6teJi0DfhI&feature=related for wallflower, which is one of my favourites.
Oh and Lisa Hannigan, though come to think of it I might have found her through you a while back... not sure.

We were lucky enough to see her perform her at the Sydney Opera House in January. It was such a memorable and buoyant show. And it was her birthday which made it even more rad!

Ya, I love her music. Went to the same college as her too, but unfortunately we weren't in the same classes :( Love her outfits too.
