Wow! Am I actually first? Maybe not - I get the feeling we may be several people around the world busily typing their messages and clicking 'post' almost at the same time ;-)
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you so much for this post. I have been struggling with my camera to take as good pictures as possible (reading the manual actuall helped, but that didn't happen until several months after purchase...) and your post really helps me to get that this really isn't just about being dumb when it comes to photography - it's actually a skill it's worth taking time to learn. That book sounds like just the thing for me - thank you for the tip!

Nice post. I have a new camera (Lumix DMC)which so far refuses to take a bad photo despite my efforts and I haven't even finished the manual yet. Anyway - thanks for the tips!

Mary

Wonderful! Thank you so much for this. Interest in photography seems to really have resurged thanks to blogging. One day I hope to switch to a big black, too. When that fun day comes - move over, Mr. Gookin - I want to buy a book called "How to Take Pretty Pictures for Your Blog" written by Miss Alicia P!

Joy

Thank you so much Alicia...I had kind of been getting frustrated with the whole depth of field thing too, and you have finally explained this in a way I can understand! You have a knack with words that makes things so much clearer...thanks for sharing the photography lesson today.

Dorian Fletcher

Thank you for the tip on the book. I am a blogging novice - using an "elderly" Nikon Coolpix 775 - and am one of those "instant grat" folks who still has rolls of film of children now in their 30s! I have followed your blog for a long time and very much enjoy your entries and beautiful photography. Here's to your gracing the "blogosphere" for a long time to come!

Alicia, I am so, so happy you posted this. I have your old "how I take pictures" post actually bookmarked on my desktop, and I've been hoping you'll give us some more tips as you learn. I got a wonderful Canon Digi Rebel this past Christmas, and just haven't had time to learn stuff. I'm really looking for good photography book recommendations, so I'm so pleased to see this one.

Sarah

Thanks for the tips and the link to the book. A little bird tells me I'm getting the wished for digital camera for my birthday so I've ordered myself a copy of this to help me along.

kathleen

Great pointers on camera use. I've been struggling with mine lately. I will persevere!

kelly

thanks for sharing this - I'm *thinking* about getting a new & scarier camera - this post gives me hope that I might actually be able to figure out the "how it works" part :)

Lilli

Clever You! Thanks so much for the tips, and the book recommendation.

It's so great that you're in that space where you have the patience to read all that technical stuff and absorb it and use it. That ain't me, Babe.....at least not these days. No patience for dry textbook stuff most of the time. But (never begin a sentence with 'but' unless you're feeling rebellious) I'm so grateful when I do find myself in that rare mood that I will allow myself to slow down and allow the new knowledge to seep in, give me new perspective and skills.

Good on ya! Love the 2nd can :)

Katie

Thanks for this post!! It's great to learn from someone who's JUST figured all this out!!

mary

***Thank You * Thank You * Thank You***

Oh my. That was all so helpful. And entertaining. And helpful. And funny.

No corrections...I just love finding out about fellow squid eaters, yum-yum. And I like how you used squid and squint in the same post.

Carol

Now I'm curious what the misstatement on page 59 is! But I don't want to run out and buy the book right now in order to find out, because we are getting ready to go on vacation...and by the time vacation is over, I will probably have forgotten about it. ;-)

Great post and great example photos!

mamie

very nice instruction. my husband and i dived into photography 4 years ago during a very extended trip to australia. we had nothing else to do, really, so we started shooting with film. it was such a revelation when depth of field became understood. it is one of my favorite aspects of photography. now, he shoots film and i dream of the SLR digital camera i may be able to afford someday. keep up the great pics. and congrats on the book.

Blair

I need a coke, you just sold one.

If only my college photography professor had been able to explain the things you just explained so succinctly, I might have enjoyed the class -- and photography -- more.

scribblesnbits

This is very interesting!!!! My new camera can do a lot of things, but I don't understand it all. But there are aperture settings so maybe I can finally take a look at those now!

JaimeLeigh

WOW, such a lot of info and so entertainingly put! Really enjoyed this post. My dad-in-law has been into photography for a while and has so many different books and zines on the subjuect. I however completely agree that there should be a "How to Take Pretty Pictures for Your Blog" book by Miss Alicia P.! Can't wait to put some of this great info to use!

Dave

I have my dad's old SLR camera from the 1960's and we just acquired a 1980's era Nikon SLR as well, which we hope to use to take beautiful photos of Portland in the near future. You should see the Macro lens for my dad's camera, it is like 6-7" long and looks like a bellows :) I dream of a digital SLR someday too, but having these two makes the cost of a digital SLR prohibitively expensive. On the other hand, we still have film from like a year ago that we haven't developed... so we'll see if we ever get to see the pictures we take :)

KellyS

Even though I don't have a fancy camera w/ an F-stop, I still very much enjoyed the post. And next, Alicia Smartypants, maybe you can do a tutorial on the LOL Cats phenomenon, because I *really* don't get that at all.

mk

Thank you! Buying that book, right now. You've just changed the way I was going to be spending my afternoon (hint: there will be less cussing now).

cheriwan

Alicia, I'm so glad you posted this, not just for the in-depth information, but really because I'm dying for good take-out, I just moved to Portland, and I will schlep out to Beaverton for Thien Hong. UNRELATED- please my dear, can you tell me where a good cake decorating store is? I so miss mine in Seattle, and am in dire need of tiny violets. Thank you if you have time to give me a suggestion.

Bethany Hissong

I think you just explained this better than my college professor when I took intro to photography! I have always had trouble remembering all of this and it is obvious from my terrible blog photos... maybe now I can practice the right way (and persuade my husband to get a better camera too!)
